Introduction to the Course

This course deals with an overview of Corporate and Retail Banking in India. The Corporate Banking segment of banks typically deals with large and medium scale corporate clients, business units engaged in manufacturing and trade including exports. Generally, they are public and private limited companies as also firms with sizeable turnover. Commercial Banks offer several products and services like working capital, term loans, treasury and foreign exchange, lease & hire purchase or trade finance requirements of these clients. Besides, non-fund based services like Letters of Credits and Bank Guarantees are also offered. In contrast, Retail Banking refers to dealing with retail (usually individual and small firms or business) customers. It is also referred as Consumer or Personal Banking segment and their transactions are relatively of smaller value but large in volumes. Typically, Retail Banking includes operating of deposit and personal loan accounts, credit cards, mutual funds, insurance, housing loans, vehicle loans, remittances as also safe deposit lockers, tax consulting, investment advisory, portfolio management, etc. Both the types of businesses are complimentary for a bank and are important part of the economy.
